GES Students Aim for College Early
February 24, 2010

Garcia Elementary School (GES) students are showing this week that it’s never too early to start thinking about college.  The school is celebrating “College Go Get It!” week and has been holding a series of events and educational activities so that every student can begin setting their individual goals for higher education.  “College Go Get It!” week kicked-off with a pep rally, and the students could not contain their enthusiasm.
Throughout the weeks leading up to the event, each grade level at GES adopted a specific college or university, and then displayed that insignia proudly throughout the school’s hallways.  The goal of the program is to break down boundaries and encourage students to start talking early about what it takes to get into college.
Continuing the college theme, week-long activities focused on providing students and parents key information on what it takes to get to college—including discussions of financial aid and the application process.

Students at Garcia Elementary Learn Lessons About Reading
February 2, 2010

Fourth grade students at Garcia Elementary School (GES), in the Canutillo Independent School District, were recently treated to a special visit by well-known author, Benjamin Alire Saenz, who has written more than 15 books including poetry, novels, and children’s books.
Saenz was invited to GES not only to read to the students, but also to listen as the fourth grade composition winners read their own stories in front of peers. As aspiring writers, these seven students were able to share their work with a published author and gain valuable knowledge from his experience.
After listening to their fellow students’ compositions, GES students focused on Mr. Saenz as he began to read his book, “The Dog Who Loved Tortillas”. The students experienced many emotions, from laughter to almost tears, as they listened to Saenz read. When Saenz had finished reading his book, a student asked him, “Why did you want to be a writer?”
